about

Purely me, and very indicative of my musical interests at the time. This was my take on Neurosis. It took a lot of convincing to get Matt to warm up to this one, but once he did we played it live a lot, and he really destroyed it every time. Again, I'm struck by how awful the vocals were. I was still trying to "sing" this when we recorded with Adam, and he asked that I try putting more "oomph" into it. I have no idea why I hadn't thought of that approach myself. Maybe because I cannot fucking sing for the life of me. We used to discuss the prospect of bringing in an actual vocalist, and I wouldn't give in to it because I couldn't envision someone else singing my songs, or letting someone else put words to my music. To a certain degree I still can't. Perhaps it's egotistical of me, but the music I write is first and foremost mine, and I have a hard time not controlling it entirely.
